Supplier Spotlight - Carrie Yeo Designer Jewellery

Today, I am delighted to share with you the work of Carrie Yeo , and her gorgeous ranges of designer jewellery.
Here she tells us about her wonderful business.

When and why did you start your business ?

"I started my business Carrie Yeo in February 2008.
I had worked for several years in fashion buying after I had finished university, and whilst I enjoyed my job it was not as creative as I had hoped, and I wanted to get back to the creative days of my design degree.
I had learnt some jewellery making skills, and had always used Swarovski crystals.
In my Graduate fashion week show I used over 5000 of them, so maybe this was a sign of things to come!"

Tell us about your collections

"Our collections are divided into themes to help you co-ordinate your jewellery with the overall theme of your wedding.
The Classic Bride collections are ideal for those having a traditional wedding, the Beach Bride collections are ideal for destination weddings, and the Crown Jewels collections utilise bright colours for a truly unique look, and the Mid-Summer Night's Dreams collections take inspiration from ethereal themes."

"Brides who want to be truly unique or perhaps have something specific in mind, can use our Bespoke Design Service to design something completely to their tastes."

What inspires you ?

"Everything !
I love to mix colours and materials, and take my inspiration from everything that I see, whether it be a vintage piece from the 1920's, a contemporary piece of art, or simply something that I see whilst walking through London; it all goes into my work."

What Drives you ?

"Whether working with Brides or celebrity clients, my passion for design drives me. I have always loved to create beautiful things, for myself and other people. I love especially love working in the wedding industry as designing for Brides to be is so rewarding. We like to ensure that we listen to Brides and ensure that our work is personal and meaningful to them. It's a great honour to be involved with the one of the most important days in a person's life and it gives me great pleasure to have contributed to their special day."

What are your plans for the future ?

"We will continue to grow our business, and add new collections every year.
We have a few big plans up our sleeve for the end of 2010, but I don’t want to jinx anything so you will just have to watch this space !"

I love the diversity of Carries designs, from the fun and flirty, to the boho chic, to the delicate, and the uber glamourous.
There is something to suit any bride.
I particularly love the Gold Butterfly Headband, its delicate flowers, and its lovely green hues remind me of a spring garden, and the many other fabulous testimonials agree that Carrie's work is a breathtaking.

Supplier Focus - Starweds - Money Gift List

A recent article in the Daily Mail suggested that a lot of couples prefer money as a wedding gift nowadays: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1271535/Forget-gifts-just-money-say-newlyweds.html so today our supplier spotlight is the lovely Gillian Bell of Star Weds.

What is Star Weds ?

"StarWeds is an exciting and unique service for contemporary couples who don't need any more toasters or towel bales.
It is an innovative gift list alternative which allows your wedding guests to make monetary contributions as a wedding gift.

The money in your wedding gift fund is your's to spend as you please i.e. you are not restricted to spending within a department store or booking with a specific travel agent.

StarWeds has your very own personalised wedding website to which your friends and family can contribute money as a wedding gift.

We provide beautiful, customised invitation inserts so that you can tell your wedding guests all about your website.

Please visit http://www.starweds.co.uk/ , and if you would like to view a sample of the personalised wedding website, then please visit http://www.starweds.co.uk/sample

When, and why was Star Weds created ?

"We came up with the idea in May last year.
We had attended five weddings in 2009 and given money as a gift at every single one.
We found that there was no safe and/or easy way to do this, so we came up with the innovative and unique idea of StarWeds."

Who is Star Weds ?

"StarWeds is comprised of myself, and my partner Chris, and we have been together for a number of years. Chris has several years of experience working in IT - hence, our stylish, sophisticated and easy to use website, and I have  been very passionate about weddings, and all things bridal from a young age, and have a wealth of customer service experience."

How does a Couple set up the List ?

"It is quick, easy, and free to set up a StarWeds account, and as part of the service we provide:

-"Personalised wedding website (upload a photo, your wedding details, messages to guests, view your online guest book and more).
This will also give a personalised URL (e.g. www.starweds.co.uk/alisonandpartner)"

-"Beautiful, customised invitation inserts to direct your wedding guests to your site"

-"Email notifications to let you know when you have received a contribution"

-"Stylish, customised gift certificates for guests"

-"Guests can choose from a variety of payment methods (credit / debit card, balance transfer or cheque)"

-"All of your funds are stored in a dedicated client fund bank account.
Only upon your request will we withdraw from this account.
Furthermore, the company is regulated by HMRC and registered as a Money Transmitter."

-"Souvenir CD ( website can be saved onto CD so that it can be treasured forever)"

-"First-class customer service as we understand that your wedding is one of the most special, and important days of your life."

What does it cost ?

"A 7% commission fee of the total contribution amount is taken off before your cheque is sent."

What separates you from your competitors?

-"We do not charge any set up or activation fees."

-"We do not charge for our beautiful, customised invitation inserts."

-"Unlike similar sites, we do not force you to create a time-consuming, laborious list justifying what your money will be spent on, we only ask for one sentence stating what you will put your money towards (e.g. 'a dream honeymoon in a tropical paradise far, far away!').
This saves a great deal of time and effort.
This sentence will be diplayed on your personalised website, and customised invitation inserts so that the guests know what their money gift will be put towards."

-"Customers can choose to contribute any amount they wish and don't have to pick from a list with pre-determined amounts."

-"StarWeds is not affiliated with any department stores or travel agencies, so you are free to spend your money on whatever you wish.
We know that in the current economic climate, most people want their money to stretch further and want to shop around for the best deal without tied to the limited options of some retailers."

-"Our customer service - we offer world-class, superior customer service.
We are highly professional, fully dedicated, and committed to keeping our customers happy and providing a personalised service that is second to none."

What is the future for Star Weds ?

"With more and more people, choosing money as a wedding gift nowadays, we believe that StarWeds success will continue to grow."

Thanks very much to Gillian for speaking to us today. From my experience on Wedding Forums, this option is very much needed.
As Gillian said there are very many couples that have already set up home, and would prefer to have a Money list so they can purchase bigger items such as furniture, or go on that luxury break that they would not ordinarily be able to afford.
I think its an absolutely brilliant idea, and think that Star Weds will continue to go from strength to strength.

Last week Georgie Baker was picked to be our first Blog Hop Feature!

Georgie Baker makes gorgeous textile treasures by the sea in Southend-On-Sea, Essex. Her textile accessories and jewellery are unique with a quirky style that makes her items stand out from the rest.

We asked Georgie 5 questions so we could find out more about her and her business.

1. Tell us more about yourself and your business.

Hello all, my name is Georgina, and I am a designer/maker living and working in Essex. I graduated from University College Falmouth in 2008 with a degree in Textile Design, and after having a little time out, now design and make textile accessories and jewellery under the moniker Georgie Baker Designs.

My work mainly consists of hand-embroidered accessories and jewellery with a vintage twist. I absolutely adore vintage collectables and anything from the Art Deco period, so I think that tends to influence my designs and thought processes. I try to make every design and piece as unique as possible, and I think this is especially important today when so much is mass-produced.

2. What do you love most about having your own business?

There are lots of things I love about designing and creating...I love the freedom of being able to set your own creative targets and deadlines, and I love getting in touch with other designers and crafters who share the same passion for beautiful things. It's also really nice when someone compliments you on a piece of jewellery or an accessory you have put alot of time and hard work into.

3. What would you like to change?

I would really like to change the space in which I work in. That's the only down-side of working from home. It's sometimes difficult to find the space and the right environment to help put you in a creative frame of mind. It just means that you have to be extra organised!

4. What do you love most about blogging?

I think blogging is so important with regards to exposure and advertising your company and products. Before I had a blog, a facebook page and twitter, I completely under-estimated the power they have to generate 'traffic' to my sites and online shop. I also like the fact that blogging helps you to keep up to date with what other designers and crafters are doing. It's really interesting to see what is being produced.

5. What is your most favourite item you have made?

I am always my own worst critic and a real perfectionist when it comes to my work, but I do enjoy seeing the finished product when it is photographed and displayed. I suppose one of my favourites is the black and white sequined magpie feather brooch. This was one of the first things I made for my accessories portflio. Having said that, there are so many more things I want to do in terms of designing and making, and there is always room for improvement!

She has recently opened an Etsy shop so check out her lovely designs:

Supplier Focus - Make Up by Katy

Today we are talking to the wonderful Katy Messer, of  Make Up by Katy, an internationally travelled make-up artist who has worked with some of the biggest names in the beauty industry

When did you start in the Make Up Business ?

"I've been a make-up artist now for over 13 years, specialising in Wedding and Photographic Make-up.
I started my company only this year, but it's now a full time company as opposed to being slotted into my full time make-up job as it was before."

What drives you ?

"Having spent the best part of a decade working with models and celebrities I have found what makes me happiest as an artist and that is making up Brides!
Nothing is more satisfying than giving a bride her dream come true and making her look and feel like a goddess.
The feel good factor and feedback in doing weddings out does any photo shoot with a 'star'.
Having said that, I still get to jet set off following brides to their exotic wedding destinations. I'm in Portugal, the South of France, Majorca and Gibraltar this Summer for weddings alone."

What's your plans for the future ?

"This year I am throwing myself into building my brand, and establishing myself as a go-to Bridal Make-up Artist for the UK.
I'm working with different photographers, and Bridal workshops to really achieve a diverse collection of work to showcase what I can do.
I can't see this job ever getting tired.
I'm one of the lucky ones who always loved Art and Make-up, and has found a way of making a living out of being good at her hobby.
And at least once a week I get to drink in the joy of seeing a Bride walk down to her family on the happiest day of her life."

Katy also gives some fantastic advice to Brides for their wedding day beauty.

Why use a Make-up Artist on your wedding day?

"I’m sure that’s a question many brides-to-be have asked themselves.
Or indeed, been asked by their fiancé/mother/mother-in-law !"

"You do your own make-up every day, why get someone in to do what you already do yourself ?”

"I’m going to take you through all the factors of bridal make-up and explain the hows and whys."

"As a make-up artist with 14 years’ experience, I’ve done the make-up for more brides than I can count. Each one had an individually designed look.
Some wanted dark smoky eyes, others wanted soft, barely there neutrals, and everything imaginable inbetween.
The one factor they all had in common?
They all wanted to look their absolute best.
The wedding day is the one day when looking perfect is imperative!"

So you need to take into consideration these aspects,

Longevity - This make-up needs to last all day. And night!

"You don’t want to be touching up your eyeshadow and re-concealing half way through the day.
Good make-up artists have tricks a plenty up their sleeves when it comes to achieving that long stay finish. I always pay close attention to the skin and address any underlying issues before I even touch it with base! Then there’s setting the make-up without looking dry and powdery, stopping the eyes from creasing, liner from smudging."

Photography - Flash photography can have a huge effect on the make-up you wear.

"It can change what looks like a natural make-up into a ‘nothing at all’ look !
That smudge of kohl pencil and quick coat of mascara won’t stand up to the job.
Without enough definition around the eyes, they’ll disappear (not literally, just photographically!).
The art is having enough on so your features are defined but not so much that you feel over done.
I have a technique where I press liner into the roots of the lash; this gives the right amount of depth just where it’s needed.
Plus, it’s waterproof, of course!"

"When it comes to foundation, having a base on that doesn’t reflect well can lead to a washed out complexion.
I’m a stickler for ensuring the skin looks as flawless as possible without even looking as though there is any make-up on.
A make-up artist will have a variety of shades in his/her kit, that way, if you’ve had a spray tan or used a self tan at home, your face will match your body exactly.
There’s nothing worse than your face looking like it’s stuck onto someone else’s body !"

"I painstakingly custom blend the foundation on the day to get the perfect shade and texture.
Also, be very careful not to use light reflective products, unless they’re being used for clever highlighting and contouring, they can reflect back a white tone, especially around the eyes and can be spotted a mile off."

The Look - We, as women, are super critical when we look in the mirror!

"It’s hard for us to be objective when it comes to our own faces.
That’s why we so often get stuck in make-up ruts.
A make-up artist looks at you differently."

"I look at my client and I see the beauty in her face.

I see what I want to enhance and emphasise, as opposed to what I want to cover.
This gives a fresh take on styles and colours that you may have never thought of.
A good make-up artist will bear what you do every day in mind and create you a look that combines your own style with new ideas.
The idea is not to make you look like someone else, just a more polished, perfect version of you!
Don’t be afraid to show clippings from magazines of make-up that you’ve seen.
Sometimes it’s easier to show than to describe.
That’s what trials are for !"
Time - Don’t underestimate how manic the morning of your wedding can get !

"I like to take the bride off into another room to do her make-up.
This gives her a break from the mayhem and lets her focus on the most important thing, herself !"

"It’s one of the things my brides always comment on, how relaxed they feel by the time their make-up is done.
Between myself and the hairdresser, we get the bride ready first and then it’s time for the bridesmaids, mother-of- bride and everyone else !
Then, when everyone is done, I return to the bride."

"By this time, she’s hopefully had something to eat and drink.
It’s time for a small sip of champagne and the last touch ups.
I put her lips on last; check the bride has her touch up items in a little bag.
I then have a look at her back, shoulders and arms for any blemishes that need camouflaging, get those covered, and sealed and wait for the dress to be put on."

"Finally, I take a picture on my digital camera to check there’s nothing reflecting badly with the flash. Then I show the bride so she can see how amazing she looks."

Thank You so much Katy for talking to us about your business, and giving us such amazing advice.

I, personally had a professional make up artist for my Big Day.
I am one of those people who wears very little make up, and needed the reassurance that I would look my best on that special day.
I am very happy that I did, as as Katy explains, it gives you that little time out from the madness to re focus.

Supplier Focus - Crystal Jewels

Today I am delighted to share with you the fantastic works of April from Crystal Jewels.

Crystal Jewels Handmade Jewellery is crafted to make each person look, and feel truly special.
They specialise in designing, and hand making bridal tiaras, wedding jewellery, bridesmaid tiaras and jewellery, and are able to provide the most unique, and beautifully bespoke pieces.

Here we ask April a few questions about the business.

How did Crystal Jewels come about ?

"Many moons ago Crystal Jewels was known as Wedding Design by April.
I set up my business originally back in 2002/2003.
At the time I was planning my own wedding, and I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for in a tiara and back then there weren't so many people designing and hand-crafting jewellery, and head-wear.
So I decided to grab some supplies, and see what I could create.
After a whole weekend of designing and making I managed to come up with several pieces that I actually quite liked.
My friends saw the designs and started asking me to design and make them tiaras, and to make jewellery for their weddings, and to give as gifts.
So it all started from there."

What happened next ?

"After a couple of years of trading I decided to take a break from it all, and focus on all the other aspects of my life.
However in 2007 I thought it was time to get back to doing what I loved, and decided to re-launch, and rebrand.

That’s when Crystal Jewels was born, although I didn’t officially start trading again until 2008.
So whilst the name Crystal Jewels has only been around for about 2 years I have been designing and creating hand crafted jewellery and tiaras for around 8 years."

Tell us about your jewellery

"My ranges are all very different. Crystal Jewels doesn't just cater for brides and their bridal jewellery, you can order jewellery for events, special occasions and gifts.
You have designs from the very girly to vintage styles."

What drives you in your business ?

"I love creating new designs, and I get completely immersed in it all.
People come to me with snip bits of ideas, and I enjoy putting them all together in one single piece, and producing a design that is totally them.
Getting an email/phone call from a happy client is the best feeling ever."

Whats the future for Crystal Jewels ?

"Crystal Jewels has a lot of exciting things happening over the next few months.
We've just taken on a new business partner, and have made a few changes behind the scenes, and on our online shop.
And as well as  Crystal Jewels taking part in many events, there will be many competitions,  give aways and discounts."

Thank you to April for speaking to us today and sharing with us her fabulous story, and her gorgeous range of jewellery.
I particularly love the Belle Tiara, so delicate, and such a vibrant turquoise colour, completely on trend for this year.
April's range is so varied, and there is something for everyone, her glowing testemonials reflect her creativity, and her wonderful service.
Crystal Jewels has also gained much Bridal Industry interest and respect, featuring in Wedding Ideas Magazine, Perfect Weddings Magazine and Brides.
